1973 Glastron Tri-Hull V-186 Swinger

Postby chiggins » Tue Dec 07, 2010 2:31 pm

I recently purchase a 1973 Glastron Tri-Hull V-186 Swinger for $100. I plan on rebuilding her from the ground up and make her like a new boat. It came with a running 1973 Evinrude 135Hp outboard and she runs great. What a mess had been stored under a pine tree for over a year without tarp. It was full of leaves and pine needles they were even inside the hull in the bilge.

Over the Winter I am going to buy new Lounge and Jump seats and make new bow seats to match. In the spring, New trailer lights, New Propeller, Remove Rub Rail Seal and seal the seam, Rebuild Lower unit including seals and water pump, New carpet throughout, Replace Bow Drain hose, Repair floor under rear deck, Install 2nd bulge, and re wire the entire boat because a none of the switches work and the fuse panel is toast. Then over the summer I would like to Rebuild dash with new gages, repair the power trim, perminatly mount secondary fuel tank, Repair / replace glove box, replace rcnter window, replace vinyl trim and add a fish finder. We will see how it goes.

The Clean Up

Postby chiggins » Tue Dec 07, 2010 2:46 pm

When I broght her home she was a mess. What a mess had been stored under a pine tree for over a year without tarp. It was full of leaves and pine needles they were even inside the hull in the bilge. The entire boat was covered in sap. What a pain! I tried simple green, power washing. Then I found Starbrite Hull Cleaner. It was a life saver. 1 bottle and the whole boat was clean. Still took some elbow grease but is is all white again.

Welcome! Nice project. How's the transom holding up? It's obviously been repainted, do yo plan to keep it as is or eventually return it to it's original gelcoat color scheme. If you have to rebuild the transom when you have the rub rail removed is the best time to tackle it by separating the top from the hull. Good luck with it!

Boy, the pics should be an advertisement for StarBrite Hull cleaner! Thats pretty amazing. That should be a real nice rig for you, the OMC 135 is a good old motor.

I just rebuilt my bow seats and they worked out pretty well. used 3/4 ply for framing and then covered with a 2"thick marine foam covered in vinyl. the corners were tricky, but in the end turned out nice. A whole lot better looking than the green originals I started with. i got lucky with the vinyl on sale, and the seats were a discounted item as they were in a close out sale. Good luck with the project. take a look at my thread when you get a chance. if you have the amount of work i did, god speed my friend.

Good luck

Great find. I have had a v186 for 20 years. It is an outstanding all around boat. Great Fun. Mine has had it all. Transom, Floor, Tank. The Evinrude has been a great motor. I run a 19pitch X13 dia SS prop. Boat runs 37mph GPS (glass) and will pull up a 200+lbs skier.
Tri-hull ride is a little rough, The stability of the tri-hull makes it a great fishing boat. Kids can move around with out Dad having to yell at them. Since word Tri-hull does not compute with many folks (except for here) just call it a Fish and Ski

Check your Transom for rot and flex. That can be a rough job. There are many examples of gentlemen here that have very nice restorations and rebuilds, so you can find lots of ideas on how to do it. There should be an 18 Gallon Tank in the front. Under the open bow area. If it’s metal, take it out and toss it. It will be full of rust and will leak. Many parts can be found at Aftermarket Marine. I put an 18 Gallon poly tank in. Hit ebay for gauges, some as cheap as $5 Seats cost me $110 each at Pontoonstuff.com. I think the carpet was $100.00from the same place. Post some more pics as you progress!

Beautiful, Hope mine looks like it some day soon... Just Got mine this fall. Starting with Seats, Carpet, Bilge, and all new electronics. Then will have to replace trim pump, Eventually we will repaint to make it look like the original paint job.

Transum was rebuilt about 3 years ago and it has been over a year since it was in the water. It was repainted and i would like to take it back to the original paintjob. This years plan is to make it usable and clean, seats carpet electronics etc. Maybe next year get it painted. If anyone has recomendations for paint products to get the original blue color would be great.

I ran into a huge problem today. I pulled up the floor and the stringers are gone. I figured they were replaced when the transum was replaced it is in good shape. So I am contimplating my opptions. I can part it out and recover my losses or repair it and the boat will be perfect when it is done. I am wondering what I could get for some of the parts.

1973 Evinrude 135 V4 runs great complete with controls tilt pump is missing and new waterpump that is not installed yet.

Trailer Gator Trailer has center rollers and 1 bunk on each side it is a great fit for the 18'7"

Windsheild - missing center section but the rest of it is in good shape needs a little clean up.

I am estimating $800 to replace stringers and bulkhead, glass in the stringers, and install floor.
It is my first boat and I love it but I do not know if it worth dropping $1000 into it. If I do the repair it should be a great boat for the next 30 years
